permanent Supportive Housing

Owned and operated by Roof Above, Moore Place offers permanent supportive housing for individuals who are chronically homeless, funded through a public-private partnership. After a successful pilot program, Moore Place opened in 2012 with an expansion in 2015, now serving 120 people with onsite support services. See Inside The Walls below for more details.

Roof Above also provides permanent supportive housing (PSH) through scattered-site programs, most notably Homeless To Homes, an expansion of the pilot program that led to Moore Place. See Homeless To Homes below for more details.

Roof Above is now converting a hotel into another single-site PSH location, shortening the lead time and reducing the costs of new construction. See SECU The Rise on Clanton below for more details.

“Where are the beds?”

In 2007, author and homeless advocate Denver Moore asked that question in Charlotte at the local soup kitchen and day ministry, Urban Ministry Center (now Roof Above). At the time, Charlotte’s homeless service agencies were serving those on the streets in day service centers and shelters, but there was no Housing First initiative.

After a $10 million capital campaign--successful despite a recession--Moore Place opened with 85 units of permanent supportive housing, demonstrating the powerful impact of the combination of the public and private will. This true, good news story was chronicled in the nonfiction book The Hundred Story Home, inspiring other communities to want to learn more.

Homeless to Homes

Scattered Site HOusing

Through Homeless To Homes and other scattered site PSH programs, Roof Above houses 215 people in market rate housing, covering the difference between what the landlord charges and what the client can afford. Support services are provided in the tenant’s home. 

SECU The Rise on Clanton

Hotel Conversion

Roof Above is now converting a hotel into another single-site PSH location, shortening the lead time and reducing the costs of new construction. Named “SECU The Rise on Clanton,” this building will provide 88 units of permanent supportive housing, replicating the success of Moore Place.
